Meditation
"Meditation is the gateway, through which you arrive to the world of freedom" - Remez Sasson
When a student mentions to their friends that they study karate, they are often met with wild "Bruce Lee" noises. Similarly, the word meditation often conjures up images of mystics or monks sitting for hours, even amongst karateka. Mokuso is a ritual held at the start and finish of every GKR class but many students do not understand its meaning or purpose.
For the beginner, meditation is essentially relaxation. Consciously slowing the body is the first step, however, meditation is largely a mental exercise. It is also a slowing of the mind and a process by which one works towards a state of peaceful serenity. At a deeper level meditation allows one to achieve a state of harmony with themselves which can translate to their interactions with others and their environment.
For those of you who have begun your karate training, learning meditation is a similar process. You can't expect to be an expert at kumite after a few lessons. You need to start by learning basic techniques. Eventually, with persistence and practice, you will discover (rather than be told) the true essence of karate and become more masterful.
In meditation, the beginning is breathing. We start by removing the mental clutter and attempt to de-stress ourselves. With repeated effort one can learn to clear their mind - to think of nothing. Once the excess energy and stress has been removed from body and mind, the spirit achieves its own freedom and can start to foster its own energy which is ultimately empowering for the one meditating.
Meditation is initially a process of cleansing. The dirt, dust, and sweat of daily life stains our skins and bodies. Just as we bathe and wash our outsides to maintain a healthy body, we should also cleanse our spirits. The stress, emotions and daily grind stains our spiritual self and to maintain a healthy person, meditation allows a process for self-cleansing.
Our basic karate training is an excellent tool for training, developing and enhancing our bodies and minds. However, we should also do the same for our spirits. It is a simple and free way to significantly improve our lives.
