  • Start the kata with a bow - Remember a bow should be slow and respectful. Keep your hands and elbows against your side. Bend from the waist between 30-45 degrees, pause very briefly as your eyes fix on the ground about 3m in front of you, and then return to the upright position. Bring both hands to in front of your groin, left on right, and then step out into heiko-dachi as your fists close.

  1. Step across with your right foot into heisoku-dachi facing left and place your left palm on your chambered right fist - You right fist is rotated 90 degrees so that the thumb is on top. Your forearms should make a 90 degree angle and just off the body. Keep your back and legs straight. This move is slow and smooth.

  2. Snap your head to the front as your hands change to the left chambered position, step back into shiko-dachi, otoshi chudan teisho-uke, uraken-uchi - There are three distinct sharp movements, but they should flow naturally. The palm block should focus at the elbow as the stance locks. The strike is then executed with a strong foundation.

  3. Step forward and across with your left foot into heisoku-dachi facing right and place your right palm on your chambered left fist

  4. Snap your head to the front as your hands change to the right chambered position, step back into shiko-dachi, otoshi teisho-uke, uraken-uchi

  5. Step forward and across with your right foot into heisoku-dachi facing left and place your left palm on your chambered right fist

  6. Snap your head to the front as your hands change to the left chambered position, step back into shiko-dachi, otoshi chudan teisho-uke, uraken-uchi

  7. Step up and to the left into gankaku-dachi, hidari otoshi teisho-uke, then simultaneous migi otoshi teisho-uke and hidari kake-uke - The right foot finishes to the side of the knee instead of tucked in behind. The first dropping palm-heel block is in time with the foot stepping across. The final blocks snap sharply as the stance locks. The hooking block doesn't hook - it only blocks with the ridge-hand.

  8. Migi mae-geri, then step across to the right into gankaku-dachi, simultaneous hidari otoshi teisho-uke and migi kake-uke

  9. Hidari mae-geri, then step back into migi zenkutsu-dachi, grabing shoulder-height, chambering both hands, morote-tsuki - The snap kick is fast as is the grabbing and punching. The timing of the grab, pull, punch is 1,2,..,3. NOTE: The double punch is at collarbone level NOT at head-level. So the arms should be parallel with the ground. Pretend you are going to grab someone's nipples, then close your fists - that's the height of the punches!

  10. Mawashi gedan tetsui-uchi - The left hand opens and both arms move around and down to groin level where the right fist smashes into the left palm. Keep your back straight throughout.

  11. Step across and turn into hidari zenkutsu-dachi, grab shoulder-height, chambering both hands, morote-tsuki - Step across before using your hips to snap your body around.

  12. Mawashi gedan tetsui-uchi - The right hand opens and both arms move around and down to groin level. This move is slow but strong.

  13. Lift the right leg and turn around into migi sanchin-dachi, migi jodan tetsui-uchi, KIAI! - Lift the right leg and turn quickly, landing strongly in stance as you land the hammerfist at head-level.

  14. Grab with the right hand and chamber, hidari shita-tsuki - The right hand grabs at neck-level and pulls sharply. The punch is sharp and strong and finishes as the right hand returns to the side in the open position, palm down. Keep low in the stance for power.

  15. Lift the left leg and turn around into hidari sanchin-dachi, hidari jodan tetsui-uchi, KIAI!

  16. Grab with the left hand and chamber, migi shita-tsuki

  17. Step forwards into migi sanchin-dachi, migi choku-tsuki - The left hand closes to a fist simultaneously.

  18. Gyaku-tsuki - This move is fast and strong.

  19. Pivot on the right foot, turning to the front into gyaku nekoashi-dachi - Both hands reach forwards.

  20. Step back into migi nekoashi-dachi, pull back and snap across - Using the hips to generate power, the hands pull back sharply. The left hand into the chamber, open, and the right across the left chest. Both hands then snap across to the right hip and left shoulder respectively, before pushing forwards slightly. This move is sharp and strong and defines the kata. Focus on your breathing.

  • Finish the kata with a bow
