Philosophy
GKR adopts a few simple underlying approaches to the teaching and training in our karate, all of which are evident no matter which dojo you should step foot in, no matter what country or continent.
"Karate for Everyone", also the title of Kancho's first book, aptly describes just what GKR is as a style. Unlike many other styles, we believe that karate is not about being the roughest and toughest block on the street. We adapt to the capabilities of each and every student. Child, adult, elderly, physically or mentally disabled, people from every culture and walk of life are welcome in our dojo doors and will be catered for.
In GKR we endeavour to teach our students basic qualities for making the most out of their karate and their dealings with daily life. These are qualities such as patience, persistence, respect, humility, self discipline, good sportsmanship, courage and confidence. We believe also in encouraging young children to adopt such values which will hold them through their many schooling years.
GKR is a way of life and a club with strong family values. Karate in itself
provides and excellent means of developing self-defence, fitness, focus,
balance, coordination and a good strong character. There is room for the strong
martial artist to train at a high level and achieve excellence. In GKR, karate
is also a way of making new friends and joining in a whole new social atmosphere
whether you be an single individual or part of a large family. GKR prides
itself on being able to offer classes where adult and child are able to stand
side by side and train together.
Finally, a fun factor is also strongly in place in GKR. Learning is best done when the pupil is having fun. That does not mean running a riot. It means being flexible and open-minded about methods of teaching which will be most engaging for the students in the class, no matter what the age or experience.
